Moments later Tad and Jake were walking down the hall to go visit Angie and Ellie. “I can’t believe you actually went and got a shirt made for that big ass bear,” Jake said shaking his head. “What?” Tad looked down at the gift bag and chuckled. “Come on, please tell me you know me better than that. I promised my girl I would have the bear some clothes. Can’t have the bear showing all his goods to the ladies,” he joked.
Jake just shook his head as they came up on Angie’s now guarded door. He was about to make a comment, but stopped when the guard held out his hand. Preventing them from entering. “Excuse me,” Jake said trying again.
“Sorry sir, no one is allowed to go in,” he said in a clipped tone.
Tad chuckled. “What? Why not?” He asked looking in. “We just come to visit our friend.” He reached to the slide the door open. This man must have been out of his mind if he thought he was going to keep them of all people from going in.
The officer slid in front of them. “Sorry sir, but the Chief said nobody is to visit Mrs. Hubbard until he returns. Besides she’s resting right now.”
Jake and Tad shared a look. “What is this about?” Jake asked. Why would Jesse put a guard at Angie’s door like she was in danger or something? He knew that couldn’t have been because Jesse would have let him and his brother in on what was happening. Just so they could keep an out.
“I’m only doing my job sir.”
“Okay, well uh… We’ll come back by later.” Jake gestured for Tad to follow him. When he started walking and Tad didn’t follow he turned to see him still trying to get inside the room. Tad had to be pulled away from the door. “What the hell was that about?” He finally asked as they headed to the nursery.
“I don’t know. But I’m sure as hell going to find out,” Jake snapped taking out his cell phone and scrolling through the contacts for Jesse’s number. It was in this moment they came up the nursery’s window. Jake peered in to see Ellie. It shocked the shit out of him when all he saw was her empty cot. “What the hell?”
Tad too saw this and began scan the whole room. When he didn’t see Ellie his mind starting racing. “Wha– Jake where is–”
He didn’t even have a chance to finish when Jake walked away and entered the nursery. “Where the hell is the nurse or doctor that’s suppose to be in here?!” He fussed after noticing there was not one adult in that room. Why were these babies alone! Where the hell was Ellie!?
Jesse was browsing the menu when this god awful feeling washed over him. He tried to shake it, but for the life of him he couldn’t. Frankie who was sitting next to him leaned over and whispered. “Hey pops. What’s wrong?”
“I– I don’t know,” he replied laying the menu down and looking around. No, he didn’t feel eyes on him or somebody standing behind him. This was a different type of feeling. One in which that pulled at his heartstrings and his gut.
“Chief you alright?” Brot asked. This time the other two, Cass and Natalia noticed and began to wonder as well. Just as he went to open his mouth to lie his cell which he had sitting on the table directly in front of him began to vibrate. He quickly grabbed it. “Angela?”
“No, Thaddeus. Where are you?”
“Um… At Krystal’s. What’s up?” He asked. He tried not to panic, but that proved to be hardest thing he ever had to do. Jesse was about to ask again when he heard Tad sigh and then as he began to speak heard the strain in his voice.
“You need to get to the hospital. Like right now.”
“Thaddeus, what’s going on?” Jesse asked jumping up from his seat and snatching his keys off the table. He dashed out of the place without stopping or looking back.
Frankie stared at the door before he too jumped up and gestured for the others to follow. They all ran out and caught up with Jesse who was now jumping in his truck. He was starting it up and throwing that sucker into drive when they all piled in.
“What’s going on?” Cass asked her big brother in a whisper. Frankie shook his head and leaned forward to hear what was being said on the other end. He could only hear a bunch of rambling.
“What!” Jesse yelled smashing on his brakes. Everybody jerked forward. “Thaddeus, this is not something you should joke about!?” He fussed.
“Why would I joke about this?”
“Shit! Shit!” He hit the steering wheel before letting him know he was on his way and throwing the phone in the cup holder. “Shit!” He fussed gripping the steering wheel.
Frankie, Cass and Natalia said in the back just as quiet as mice. They didn’t know how to approach him at the moment. Brot who was sitting up front with Jesse reached over. “Jesse, what is it?” he asked softly.
Jesse put his truck in park and jumped out. Brot got out with him and went around to the other side. “Drive… I need you to get us to the hospital. And I need you to do it now.”
“Chief what’s going on?” Brot asked.
Jesse just gave him a look before he went around to passenger side. Brot didn’t lag behind either. He soon got behind the wheel and put Jesse’s 2010 F150 to the test. He swung that baby out the parking lot and handled it as if it was his squad car.
All the while Jesse was sitting next to him, rubbing the bridge of his nose and blaming himself. Nobody knew why, but they all knew it had something to do with Angie. He kept saying, She’s going to kill me. She’s going to kill me. Shit!
“Frankie, I don’t like the feeling I’m getting right now,” Cass whispered.
Frankie eased his arm around his sister. “Everything okay.” He was assuring her of it, but he was also assuring himself that everything was okay.
